Magento Installation

(Operating System: Kubuntu 12.10)

Requirements

  1. You need to have Apache, MySql and PHP installed and configured on your server to proceed.
  2. Download Magento and Magento Sample Data from here.

Setting It Up

  1. Un-compress the packages that you downloaded and copy the contents of the Magento package to your server root or a folder inside your server root (normally, for Ubuntu based systems, this would be /var/www).
  2. Copy the contents of the media folder from the extracted contents of the Magento Sample Data archive to the media folder in your magento directory.
  3. Create a new database and import magento_sample_data_for_1.6.1.0.sql (this is extracted from the Magento Sample Data archive) to it. The size of the sql dump file is 2.3 MB so if you are using something like ‘phpmyadmin’, please ensure that the values for upload_max_filesize and post_max_size are set to larger than 2MB.

Installation

  1. Fire up your browser and point it to http://localhost/[name-of-the-folder-you-copied-magento-to]. You are greeted with:
    magento-begin-installation_thumb8
  2. Now before you click on ‘I agree to the above terms and conditions.’ without as much as glancing at the terms and conditions, edit [name-of-the-folder-you-copied-magento-to]/app/code/core/Mage/Install/etc/config.xml and replace
    <databases>
        <mysql4>
            <type>pdo_mysql</type>
            <initStatements>SET NAMES utf8</initStatements>
            <min_version>4.1.20</min_version>
             <extensions>
                  <pdo_mysql />
            </extensions>
        </mysql4>
    </databases>

    with:

    <databases>
        <mysql4>
            <type>pdo_mysql</type>
            <initStatements>SET NAMES utf8</initStatements>
            <min_version>4.1.20</min_version>
             <extensions>
                  <pdo_mysql>1</pdo_mysql>
            </extensions>
        </mysql4>
    </databases>

    otherwise, the installation process would fail.

    3.  Now you can click on ‘I agree to the above terms and conditions.’ checkbox and continue with the installation.
